Rockin' With Miles

Remember this? My buddy found a YouTube video of Ricky playing with Miles. The whole 10 minutes is awesome.

8 Year Old Banned From Bars!

Why does the Man keep holding this kid down?

When Tallan "T-Man" Latz was 5, he saw Joe Satriani playing guitar on TV. "I turned around to my dad and said, 'That's exactly what I want to do.'"

Three years and countless hours of practicing later, 8-year-old Tallan is a blues guitar prodigy. He's played in bars and clubs, including the House of Blues in Chicago, and even jammed with Les Paul and Jackson Browne. He has a summer of festivals scheduled and has drawn interest from venues worldwide.

And what, you might ask, would a kid not even in the third grade have the blues about? The state of Wisconsin for one, and some possibly jealous older musicians for another.

An anonymous e-mail sent to state officials complained that Tallan was too young to perform in taverns and nightclubs because of state child labor laws. His booking agent even got an anonymous letter threatening her with death if she keeps booking him.

I say rock on little dude!

Escaping the Delta

I bought this book by Elijah Wald on a whim (I think the cover art drew me in). It is about the myths surrounding Robert Johnson and his music and personality are not as "god-like" as people like to make them sound. I am only a few chapters into but I am getting a lesson in music and blues history.

People like Charley Patton, Leroy Carr, Ma Rainey, and Tampa Tom are every bit as responsible for what we call the blues but get very little attention. It is a very interesting book. I am also learning that I love Hokum.

The Real McCoy

I have a secret to admit. I like Kid Rock. Yes, his lyrics are misogynistic sometimes and there is a lot of inane-ness to his work. But it fucking rocks!!! His new album, Rock and Roll Jesus, is awesome. I particularly like the title track, So Hott, All Summer Long, New Orleans, Half Your Age, and Lowlife. All just awesome, "break out the beer and whiskey" party songs. Here are the opening lyrics to New Orleans:

I'm goin' down to New Orleans to see about a friend of mine
I'm goin' down to New Orleans and leavin' all of this behind
Headin' south from Detroit
I got Cajun cookin' on my mind
When I get to New Orleans someone gonna treat me right
Yeah in a town like New Orleans someone gonna treat me right
I'll be high 10 Rollin' till the early morning break daylight

Buddy Guy: Skin Deep

Buddy Guy has a new album out (he is 72!!!) called Skin Deep. Here is a review from the Canadian Press:

Blues may be an ageless music, but most players ease into old age with relaxed grace. Not Buddy Guy, who sounds as distinctively piercing on "Skin Deep" as on his classic '60s Chess Records cuts or his early '90s comeback albums.

At 72, Guy still cuts shards of razor-sharp glass from his Fender Stratocaster, and his voice remains an anguished cry. "Skin Deep" follows the modern formula for legendary figures by pairing the Chicago blues master with acolytes. In this case, he duets with Eric Clapton (on the groovin' "Every Time I Sing The Blues"), steel guitar standout Robert Randolph (the swampy "Out In The Woods" and the hip-shaking "That's My Home"), young guitar ace Derek Trucks (the sweetly soulful "Skin Deep") and Trucks and his wife, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi (the fierce "Too Many Tears"). This album marks the first time he has recorded all orginal tunes.

I Did It Bitches!

Finally, I recorded some songs from my new GDEC to my computer. Granted, it didn't happen the way I wanted it to. I ended recording essentially live using the built-in mic on my laptop. So the quality is not the best (not even close), but these are actual songs. I posted them on my MySpace.com band page. You can listen to them here.

New Toys

Well, I did it. I bought the Fender GDEC today. It is a lot of fun. Nothing like going to the guitar store and dropping almost $400 to make your heart jump for joy, right?

I am still learning how to use it, but basically it is an amp that accompanies you. It has a lot of built-in FX and amp models plus drums and backing tracks. Muy kewl-o in my opinion. Now The Dark Merrymakers are full fledged band. LOL!
